What’s Emodin Powder?

Emodin is a kind of organic matter, chemical formula is C15H10O5, orange yellow long needle crystal, crystal orange in acetone, crystal yellow in methanol, melting point 256℃ ~ 257℃, has a special reaction of anthraquinone, almost insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and alkali solution.

Emodin is a natural compound extracted from Chinese herbs such as Rhubarb and Polycuspidum cuspidatum, which has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-tumor and other pharmacological effects. Emodin is mainly used for antiFOOD, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutation, ANTI-corrosion, anti-cancer (chest), anti-ulcer, anti-virus, catharsis, gonadotropin, anti-epidemic, insecticide, laxative, spasMODIc, hemostatic agent.

1, Antitumor activity

Emodin has inhibitory effects on solid sarcoma S-180, liver cancer, breast cancer, Ehrsson ascites carcinoma, lymphosarcoma, melanoma, Wackeroma and lung cancer A-549 in mice, and the inhibitory rate is more than 30%. At the dose of 50mg/kg daily -1, the inhibition rate of melanoma growth in mice was 73%. The inhibition rate of breast cancer in mice was 45% at 75mg/kg daily -1 dose. Emodin can prolong the survival of P388 leukemia mice by more than 40%. One of its mechanisms is the inhibition of DNA, RNA and protein biosynthesis in cancer cells, and the inhibition of oxidative dehydrogenation in cancer cells.

2, Anti-microbial growth effect

Emodin had inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus 209P, Streptococcus, Bacillus diphtheriae, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus paratyphoid, Bacillus dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Bacillus influenzae, pneumococcus and Catarlococcus. It has a strong inhibitory effect on clinical common anaerobic bacteria. Its MIC was slightly higher than metronidazole, and it could inhibit the growth of 76%~91% anaerobic bacteria at 8μg/ mL concentration. The antibacterial mechanism of emodin is related to the inhibition of electron transport in mitochondrial respiratory chain and the oxidation and dehydrogenation of metabolites of amino acids, sugars and proteins. The final result of inhibition of nucleic acid and protein synthesis, so that bacterial growth is inhibited.

3, Immunosuppressive effect

Intraperitoneal injection of emodin at a dose of 70mg/kg can inhibit the production of antibody, inhibit the clearance ability of carbon particles, reduce the weight of immune organs, reduce the number of white blood cells, and reduce the phagocytosis function of peritoneal macrophages. In vitro, 10mg/ml concentration of [3H] -tdr and [3H] -urd injected lymphocytes had a significant inhibitory effect.

4, Antispasmodic and antitussive effects

Emodin has a strong inhibitory effect on the spasm of the isolated rat intestine induced by acetylcholine, which is about 4 times that of papaverine. Emodin also has significant cough suppressant effects.

5, Effects on the cardiovascular system

Emodin has excitatory effect on the isolated toad heart at low dose, while it has inhibitory effect at high dose. Emodin also has a blood pressure lowering effect.

6, Diuretic effect

Emodin can increase sodium and potassium content in urine, promote ureteral peristalsis, increase urine volume.

7, The effect on histamine

When emodin was administered at the dose of 10μg/kg to rats with experimental intestinal obstruction, the histamine content in intestinal mucosa of rats could be restored to the normal level, but it had no effect on the histamine content in blood.

8, LTB4 synthesis

Emodin is an inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase, which can inhibit the synthesis of LTB4 in human multinucleated leukocytes and whole blood, but has no inhibitory effect on the synthesis of PGE2.

9, Under the purging effect

Emodin CAN inhibit sodium AND potassium ions FROM THE intestinal lumen transport to the cell, make water retention in the intestinal LUMen, stimulate LARGE intestine, promote its PERISTALsis, thereby have diarrhea action, but the effect is weaker.

Application

Emodin can be used as laxative, although have cathartic activity, but because the body is easy to be destroyed by oxidation, actually cathartic effect is very weak, if combine with sugar into glycosides,can play cathartic effect. Emodin - 1-O-β-D-glucoside and emodin - 8-O-β-D-glucoside are the glycosides of emodin and glucose, but they bind in different locations and exist in rhubarb.
