About betahistine. Ménière's disease is a condition of the inner ear. It typically causes attacks of dizziness with a spinning sensation (vertigo), hearing loss and noises in the ear (tinnitus). The attacks can vary in severity, and in how often they occur.

What is betahistine used for?

1.Betahistine is used to treat symptoms of Meniere’s disease, a condition of the inner ear that can cause symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vertigo (a spinning sensation), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss.

2.There is a lack of good-quality trials investigating its effectiveness but it does appear to have positive effects on vertigo, although it is hard to determine how great these effects are.

3.Betahistine may also be called betahistine dihydrochloride.

 

How does betahistine work?
Experts aren’t sure exactly how betahistine works to treat Meniere’s disease but it is a potent histamine-3 (H3) receptor antagonist and may work as a vasodilator. Blocking H3 receptors increases histamine release and some research suggests histamine receptors regulate the function of nerves in the inner ear. However, there are contradictory theories and it is not exactly clear how it may help.
