Osthole is a kind of natural coumarin compounds first extracted and isolated from Umbelliferae plants. The dry mature fruit of Umbelliferae Cnidium has a higher content in Fructuscnidii, hence the name. Cnidium is mainly distributed in East China, Central South, Southwest, Northwest, North China, Northeast China and other places.

1. Anti-pathogenic microorganism effect　

Cnidium has an inhibitory effect on Epidermophyton flocculus, Microsporum gypsum, and Microsporum laniformis in the test tube. Newcastle virus cultured on chicken embryos can extend the life of chicken embryos by 6 hours. Cnidium extract (1:2) has a strong killing effect on Trichomonas vaginalis in vitro. However, it has also been reported that with liver extract as a medium, 10% and 20% of Cnidium monnieri decoction have no or very weak effect on Trichomonas vaginalis.

2. Sex hormone-like effects　

Continuous subcutaneous injection of the ethanol extract of Cnidium monnieri for 32 days can prolong the estrus period and shorten the estrus period, and can make the ovariectomized mice appear estrus, and can also increase the weight of the ovaries and uterus. 3. Killing effect on sperm

4. Anti-allergic effect　

Animal experiments show that the acetone extract of Cnidium monnieri has a strong antihistamine effect. Can obviously antagonize the intestinal muscle contraction caused by histamine, chronic reaction substances, and 2% egg white. Osthole administered to mice has a strong inhibitory effect on passive skin allergic reactions in mice. Osthole injection can inhibit the degranulation of rat peritoneal mast cells caused by trichosanthin.

5. Anti-arrhythmic effect　

The water extract of Cnidium has preventive effects on chloroform-induced ventricular fibrillation in mice, calcium chloride-induced ventricular fibrillation in rats, and aconitine-induced arrhythmia in rats, and has obvious therapeutic effects on the latter. This shows that the water extract of Cnidium monnieri has anti-arrhythmic effects. It can effectively counteract the ectopic rhythm of aconitine which promotes the opening of sodium channels and accelerates the influx of Na+. It is suggested that the water extract of Cnidium monnieri has a significant inhibitory effect on the influx of Na+ and Ca++ in the myocardial cell membrane, thereby exerting an anti-arrhythmic effect.

6. Effect on the respiratory system　

Studies have shown that: Cnidium has a strong bronchiectasis effect. Osthole can increase the guinea pig lung perfusion flow, and its effect is stronger than aminophylline. Gavage of total coumarin from Cnidium monnieri to guinea pigs can prolong the attack time of guinea pig asthma caused by histamine phosphate and acetylcholine chloride. In vitro experiments proved that the total coumarin of Cnidium has a strong antagonistic effect on the isolated guinea pig tracheal contraction induced by histamine. The above effects can be blocked by Propranolol without affecting the heart rate and blood pressure of anesthetized animals, suggesting that the total coumarin of Cnidium may selectively excite the β2 receptors on the bronchial smooth muscles, resulting in antispasmodic and antiasthmatic effects. Gavage of total coumarin from Cnidium monnieri can significantly increase the excretion of phenol red, suggesting that this product has a strong expectorant effect.

7. Local anesthesia effect　

Cnidium occidentalis decoction and alcohol precipitation (100%) can completely block the generation of action potentials of isolated sciatic nerve in toads, and its strength is the same as 10% procaine, and normal conduction function can be restored after stopping the drug; it can infiltrate guinea pigs Anesthesia, which can be enhanced by epinephrine hydrochloride, but the local anesthesia time is shorter than 10% proca; it has spinal anesthesia for rabbits, but it has no surface anesthesia for rabbit corneas.

8. Anti-mutagenic effect

9. Other functions　

The extract of Cnidium monnieri has the effect of repelling roundworms. Cnidium can kill larvae in sewage.

Cnidium monnieri extract (100%) can significantly enhance the hypnotic effect of pentobarbital sodium at the subthreshold hypnotic dose; the total coumarin of Cnidium monnieri can significantly prolong the sleep time of mice caused by pentobarbital sodium .
