What’s Glucosamine?
Glucosamine powder, a natural amino monosaccharide, is essential for proteoglycan synthesis in human articular cartilage matrix. The molecular formula is C6H13NO5, with a molecular weight of 179.2. Formed by a hydroxyl group of glucose replaced by an amino group, easily soluble in water and hydrophilic solvents. Commonly present in microbial, animal-derived and bound polysaccharides as n-acetyl derivatives (such as chitin) or as n-sulfates and n-acetyl-3-O-lactate ethers (muramic acid).

Function
Glucosamine is an essential component for proteoglycan synthesis in cartilage matrix. Proteoglycans can make articular cartilage have the function of absorbing impact force by inhibiting the stretching force of collagen fibers. In the early stage of joint degenerative diseases, the biosynthesis of aggregated glucan is increased; In the later stages of the disease, the opposite is true. As a result, the cartilage becomes less elastic and develops the symptoms of arthritis. Amino monosaccharides can stimulate chondrocytes to produce glycoproteins with normal polymeric structure, inhibit some enzymes that can damage articular cartilage (such as collagenase), prevent the damage of corticosteroids and some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to chondrocytes, and reduce the release of endotoxin factors that damage cells. Exogenous glucosamine supplementation may play a beneficial role in the development of arthritis. In Vitro, When glucosamine was supplemented, chondroforming polymorpchic cells were able to synthesize more glucan aggregates. In animal models of arthritis, glucosamine also acts as an antioxidant, inhibiting the production of cell-damaging superoxide radicals. Through these pathways, glucosamine exerts a direct anti-inflammatory effect, which can relieve the painful symptoms of osteoarthritis, improve joint function, and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis.

1.On immune regulation

3.Anti-oxidation, anti-aging
Some scholars have studied the antioxidant ability of chito-oligosaccharide and its protective effect on CCL4-induced liver injury in mice. The results show that chito-oligosaccharide has antioxidant ability and has a relatively obvious protective effect on CCL4-induced liver injury in mice, but cannot reduce the oxidative damage of DNA. In addition, the ameliorative effect of glucosamine on CCL4-induced liver injury in mice was studied. The results showed that glucosamine could increase the activities of major antioxidant enzymes in liver of experimental mice, while reducing the contents of AST, ALT and malondialdehyde (MDA), indicating that glucosamine had certain antioxidant capacity. However, CCl4 could not reduce the oxidative damage of DNA in mice. The antioxidant activity and the ability to activate immune responses of glucosamine have been studied by various methods in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that glucosamine could chelate Fe2+ well and protect lipid macromolecules from oxidative damage by hydroxyl radical. [3]
4.Anticorrosive and antibacterial aspects
Some scholars selected 21 kinds of common food spoilage bacteria as experimental strains, and studied the antibacterial effect of glucosamine hydrochloride on these 21 kinds of bacteria. The results showed that glucosamine had obvious antibacterial effect on 21 kinds of bacteria commonly found in food, and glucosamine hydrochloride had the most obvious antibacterial effect on bacteria. With the increase of glucosamine hydrochloride concentration, the bacteriostatic effect gradually became stronger.
