Magnesium ethoxide is a white or off-white powder that gradually decomposes in air. It is soluble in ether, non-polar solvents and some organic solvents, but insoluble in water. Magnesium ethoxide is strongly basic and can react with acids to form corresponding ester compounds.

Product Application 

Magnesium ethoxide can be used in thermogravimetric analysis, where its main function is to cause evaporation and decomposition reactions in the sample and to increase the accuracy and sensitivity of the analysis. Magnesium ethanol is commonly used in thermogravimetric analysis at concentrations of 10-20%. In the analysis process, a small amount of magnesium ethoxide is added directly to the sample, and then the sample is analyzed in the thermogravimetric analyzer along with the reagents.
Magnesium ethoxide can be made from magnesium metal and reacted with ethanol using mercuric chloride or iodine as catalyst. Magnesium ethoxide is used as a catalyst carrier for olefin polymerization, used in polypropylene, high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene polymerization; raw material for precision ceramics. It is mainly used in pharmaceutical industry and organic synthesis.

1. Organic synthesis: Solid magnesium ethoxide is commonly used in organic synthesis, especially in Grignard reagent reaction. It can react with halogenated hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones and other compounds to generate new organic compounds.
