Types Of Sodium Hyaluronate
Types of Sodium Hyaluronate
Sodium Hyaluronate is regarded as the gold standard of moisturising ingredients in skincare, leading the skincare market and becoming the benchmark ingredient most often mentioned and requested by consumers when talking about innovation, trends and efficacy. Sodium Hyaluronate is actually the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, a high molecular straight-chain mucopolysaccharide consisting of repeated linkages of N-acetylaminoglucose and D-glucuronide disaccharide units, which is widely found in the extracellular matrix of connective tissues in animals and humans.
It is highly extended in aqueous solution and irregularly curled state of the conformation of the state so that it occupies a large area, and the molecular chains are intertwined to form a continuous mesh structure, so that sodium hyaluronate like a "molecular sponge", can absorb and retain thousands of times its own weight of water. Widely used in medicine, cosmetics, health food, sodium hyaluronate into the human body can be hydrolysed into hyaluronic acid, play moisturising, allergy, anti-inflammatory, repair, increase skin elasticity, anti-wrinkle and other effects.
Types of sodium hyaluronate
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronic acid. Due to its negatively charged ions, it is hydrophilic and can absorb a large amount of water. The space between collagen in the dermis is mainly retained by hyaluronic acid, whose molecular structure can carry more than 500 times the amount of water. However, hyaluronic acid is a long-chain macromolecule that cannot pass through the skin to reach the dermis, so it is impossible to remove wrinkles by rubbing hyaluronic acid, but hyaluronic acid is a good moisturising ingredient, and its use can reduce small fine lines caused by dry skin.
Hydrolysed hyaluronic acid is a high molecular hyaluronic acid that is broken down by enzymes to obtain a hyaluronic acid with a smaller molecular weight to improve permeability. Unlike Hyaluronic Acid, which has an average molecular weight of 500,000-2 million Daltons (Da), Hyaluronic Acid has a molecular weight of 10,000 Da or less.
Sodium hyaluronate is commonly used:
① Oligomeric sodium hyaluronate (molecular weight less than 10,000 Da);
② Small molecule sodium hyaluronate (molecular weight 10,000 Da-1,000,000 Da);
③ medium molecule sodium hyaluronate (molecular weight 1 million Da-1.8 million Da);
④ large molecule sodium hyaluronate (molecular weight > 1.8 million Da);

The skin care function of sodium hyaluronate mainly depends on the molecular weight and dosage. Generally speaking, the larger the molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate, the greater the intertwining effect between molecules, the formation of a wider molecular network, formed on the surface of the skin moisturising breathable film, so that the skin moisturised and bright, with nutrition, anti-wrinkle, rejuvenation effect. Molecular weight above 2 million Da is generally used for water storage and moisturising, UV protection, etc.; 1.2~1.6 million Da is the most commonly used and cost-effective sodium hyaluronate; 20~400,000 Da is based on the conventional molecular weight by enzymatically lowering its molecular weight and increasing its mobility, so as to make it play a better moisturising effect in the essence; molecular weight of 10,000 Da or less can be used to penetrate into the stratum corneum to achieve the function of deep skin hydration. The molecular weight of 10,000 Da or less can penetrate into the stratum corneum of the skin to achieve the function of deep hydration.
Sodium hyaluronate dosage is generally more than 0.1 %, it will produce molecular folding, the formation of a continuous three-dimensional network, resulting in a variety of physiological effects, data show that: 0.1 % of sodium hyaluronate has a moisturising effect.
Different molecular weights of sodium hyaluronate can increase the skin moisture content when adding 0.1%, the higher the molecular weight of HA, the lower the skin moisture content; oligomeric HA has the strongest effect to increase the skin moisture content. The higher the molecular weight of HA, the lower the skin moisture content; Oligomeric HA has the strongest effect on increasing the skin moisture content. It also reduces transdermal water loss (TEWL), which results in moisturisation. Compounding of sodium hyaluronate of different molecular weights provides a synergistic effect and shows better moisturising effect.
