What’s the side effects of indapamide?

Indapamide, an oral blood pressure lowering drug, is also a potassium-removing diuretic. Because this drug is a non-thiazide sulfa drug, it should not be used in patients who are sensitive to sulfa.

Antihypertensive mechanism of indapamide

Initial antihypertensive mechanism: the main sodium diuresis to reduce the volume of plasma and extracellular fluid.

Long-term antihypertensive mechanism: Because of its sodium release effect, it reduces the concentration of Na+ in vascular smooth muscle cells, and through Na+-Ca2+ exchange, it reduces the intracellular Ca2+, reduces the reactivity of vascular smooth muscle to vasoconstrictor substances, and enhances the sensitivity to vasodilatory substances.

Thiazide diuretics are especially suitable for elderly patients with hypertension, simple systolic hypertension or heart failure.

Thiazide diuretics and ACEI/ARB have synergistic antihypertensive effects:

Long-term use of thiazide diuretics can increase renin activity and angiotensin ⅱ level. ACEI/ARB can block the synthesis of angiotensin ⅱ and inhibit the binding of angiotensin ⅱ to its receptor, and play a synergistic antihypertensive effect with thiazide diuretics.

Side effects

Common side effects include:

Hypokalemia (pay attention to the loss of potassium ions after urination and dizzy fall);

Tired;

Postural hypotension (dizziness after sitting down or squatting up).
