What’s Enoxaparin sodium?

Enoxaparin sodium is the sodium salt of depolymerized heparin. It is obtained by alkaline depolymerization of heparin benzyl ester. The starting material heparin is obtained exclusively from porcine intestinal mucosa.

Enoxaparin sodium consists of a complex group of oligosaccharides that have not been fully characterized. Most of the components have a 4-terrestris uronic acid structure at the non-reducing end of their chain. Approximately 20% of the material contains having a 1,6-anhydride derivative at the reducing end of the chain, ranging between 15% and 25%. The weight average molecular weight of Enox-aparin sodium is 4500Da, ranging from 3800-5000Da.

Function

Enoxaparin is a low molecular weight heparin that separates the antithrombotic and anticoagulant activities of standard heparin. The main feature is that its anti-Xa activity is higher than that of anti-coagulation factor IIa, that is, antithrombin activity. For enoxaparin, the ratio of these two activities is 3.6.

Application

Enoxaparin sodium is a low molecular weight heparin used as an anticoagulant to prevent and treat deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
