What Is The Benzocaine

Ethyl p-aminobenzoate, also known as benzocaine, chemical formula is C9H11NO2, is an organic compound. It is a colorless rhomboid crystal, odorless and tasteless. Soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, soluble in almond oil, olive oil, dilute acid, insoluble in water.

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that can be used on the nerve tissue of the skin and mucous membranes to block the conduction of nerve impulses and temporarily lose various sensations. It can paralyze nerve endings and produce pain relief and antipruritic effects. Benzocaine is an inhibitory nerve excitation component contained in it, and long-term use will reduce local sensitivity.

Common uses of benzocaine

1. It is used to improve male sensitivity. After male use, it can reduce the sensitivity of the glans and effectively prolong the time of intercourse.

2. Local anesthetics, used for relieving itching and pain in wounds, ulcers and hemorrhoids, with a concentration of 5% to 20%, and also used as intermediates in drug synthesis and organic synthesis.

3. Ultraviolet absorber. Mainly used in sunscreen and tanning cosmetics, it is chemically stable to light and air, safe for the skin, and has the ability to form a film on the skin. It can effectively absorb ultraviolet rays in the 280-320μm medium wave light region in the U.V.B region. The addition amount is usually about 4%.

Dosage

1. Use 20% suspension for the ear. Adults can use 4 to 5 drops at a time, drip into the external auditory canal, and repeat the administration for 1 to 2 hours as needed. Generally, cotton must be used to block the ear after the ear drop to prevent outflow; children are generally not used.

2. Ointment 5%, 20%, for adults for hemorrhoids, apply to the affected area, once in the morning, in the evening and after defecation; not for children.

3. 20% aerosol solution, which can be administered repeatedly as needed for skin or mucous membranes; not required for children under 3 years old. The gel is 20%, mainly used for the affected area of the gums in the mouth to prevent toothache. The gel for children is 5%.

4. 10% to 20% of the spray liquid, spray on the affected area, repeat as needed, and use with caution in children.

When to use benzocaine

1. Patients who are allergic to benzocaine, patients with periodontitis, incisor filling and patients with a history of methemoglobinemia are contraindicated.

2. External preparations should not be used for children aged 1-2, and they should be used under professional guidance after weighing the pros and cons in special circumstances.

Benzocaine Precautions

3. Children should be used with caution in large doses, as there is a risk of causing methemoglobinemia.
